Why do authors use wordplay? First of all, what even is wordplay? Wordplay is kind of self explanitory. It is playing with words. Wordplay is a way of making writing more comical or interesting. This writing style, type, or whatever you would like to call it, comes in many different categories. These categories contain puns, diction, assonance, alliteration, lexicon, syntax, repetition, and personification. A pun, is two words which sound alike but have a different meaning. Diction is simply the choice of words an author uses to express something. Assonance is the repetition of a vowel within a sentence. Alliteration is the repetition of a consonant sound in words in a sentence. Lexicon is a special vocabulary. Syntax is the arrangement of words in a sentence. Repetition is the same thing happening over and over again. And finally, personification is when inanimate objects are given human-like qualities.
